The American Great Loop is the boaters equivalent of Highway 61. I had thought I was boated out after the circumnavigation of Australia but I have now regained my composure.
We have located a suitable vessel in Florida and have agreed on a lease commencing in March. Still need to resolve insurance and visa contingencies which hopefully will be sorted shortly. We will take the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway to New York, up the Hudson River to Albany then west on the Erie Ship Canal to the Great Lakes. From Chicago up the Illinois River to the Mississippi down to the Gulf of Mexico and back to Florida 6000 nm over about 6 months. The vessel which will become Balakera 6 is pictured below.

Sounds fantastic – I have always been very tempted to do the Big Loop but so many things seem to get a higher priority. Having read many books written by those who have completed the trip I am sure that you will have a ball and have just as many hair raising stories as you collected sailing around Oz. The boat looks like an excellent choice for the trip although parts of the Chesapeake (our home in 1993-1995) can be very exposed as are the Great Lakes.
