Delightful place with no vehicles, only horse drawn carriages and bikes. The atmosphere and the buildings look like they came straight out of the 1800s. The piece de resistance of the island is the stately Grand Hotel which boasts the longest verandah in the world.
They have begun to charge $10 just to enter the hotel and view the verandah before you even order a drink, so I turned around on principle, but I got close enough to feel the ambience of the place.
Then I hired a bike for $5 an hour and cycled right around all 11 miles of the island. Deveen went off to a museum today in St Ignace and I enjoyed a day off from skippering by taking the ferry over to the island and letting someone else drive.
